Power of the Pie The Derby-Pie was created 50 years ago at the Meirose Inn in Prospect, Kentucky, by George, Walter, and Leaudra Kern. Today, the dessert is a registered trade-mark of Kern's Kitchen in Louisville. Although the recipe is a tightly held family secret, Alan Rupp, Kern's Kitchen president and Walter and Leaudra's grand-son, confirms a few facts: Among other ingredients, the pie contains English walnuts, chocolate chips, and vanilla.
