| The
Power of the Pie
BY SCOTT JONES
Southern Living, 2005
The Derby-Pie was created 50 years ago at the
Meirose Inn in Prospect, Kentucky, by George, Walter, and Leaudra
Kern. Today, the dessert is a registered trade-mark of Kern's Kitchen
in Louisville. Although the recipe is a tightly held family secret,
Alan Rupp, Kern's Kitchen president and Walter and Leaudra's grand-son,
confirms a few facts: Among other ingredients, the pie contains
English walnuts, chocolate chips, and vanilla. It does not contain
corn syrup or bourbon.Derby fever kicks in around the first of April
and continues through race day in May. Between that time, Alan says
more than 50,000 Derby-Pies are sold. If you'd like one delivered
to your front door, visit www.derbypie.com.
